TRAVEL INSURANCE PLANS

A Path for Navigating Life’s Obstacles

Medical Insurance

Never assume your provincial health care plan will cover the costs of your health-related expenditures during your trip. Before finalizing your policy, mention any pre-existing health concerns you may have with your SBC Insurance broker.

  • Many countries won’t provide care without cash or proof of insurance
  • It covers the expenses associated with your death outside of Canada
  • Plans typically include provisions for medical evacuation

Trip Interruption Insurance

Unlike cancellation insurance, which will reimburse you should your plans change before your departure, interruption insurance covers the majority of expenses associated with cutting your trip short, be it an injury, or anything else covered by your policy.

  • Flights, boat cruises
  • Meals, hotel stays
  • Taxis, local transport fares

Comprehensive Travel Insurance

A comprehensive travel insurance package gives you the ultimate peace of mind for any holiday! In addition to the compensation you’ll receive for any medical expenses and fees involved in returning home before your intended return date, you qualify for payment on the following:

  • Lost luggage
  • Stolen personal effects
  • Cancelling your trip altogether

Frequently Asked Questions

01. Should I opt for single-trip or multi-trip insurance?

If you travel frequently (3 or more times per year), you may be better off inquiring about an annual multi-trip travel insurance option. However, this type of policy is not to be confused with multi-destination travel insurance, which covers your stays in various locations during the same vacation. If in doubt, ask your SBC Insurance advisor for clarification.

02. What happens if I visit a doctor on my trip?

Ask the hospital or medical clinic for an invoice that reports the charges and any prescribed medications. It’s much easier to do this at the time, rather than trying to contact them from Canada. Be sure to make copies. You’ll need to submit the originals when making a claim.

03. Do I need travel insurance if I’m staying in Canada?

Many Canadians think their provincial healthcare plan provides the same benefits no matter where they travel in the country. This isn’t exactly true. A lot of medical-related scenarios aren’t necessarily covered, including the cost of an ambulance trip (on the ground or in the air), dental emergencies, and acquiring prescription drugs. If your travels include athletic activities, we advise consulting with an SBC Insurance advisor before you go.

04. I have an existing medical condition; can I still purchase travel medical insurance?

Yes you can (with some exceptions). We advise all travellers to have some form of insurance for dealing with those unexpected emergencies that require immediate treatment. SBC Insurance can discuss all your available options.

05. What happens if I decide to extend the length of my vacation while I’m out of the country?

If you think this may be a possibility at some point, we suggest mentioning this to your insurance broker during your initial meeting. That way, you can obtain the insurance that allows for such a possibility. Otherwise, get in touch with us before your original policy expires to determine your next steps.

06. Are there activities travel medical insurance won’t cover?

Depending on the policy, most plans won’t cover non-emergency medical treatments, childbirth, self-inflicted harm, or injuries sustained during illegal, high-risk activities. Your participation in certain sports may limit the extent of coverage you receive. As a sports-minded insurance brokerage, our team will ensure you have the right coverage for your travels.
